History of JAM

History of JAM

In the summer of 1999, Dr. Susumu Hamada called on the psychiatrists in the metropolitan area to take initiatives in promoting the mental health in the community. Responding to his call, on Oct 17, 1999, about a hundred psychiatrists almost all of whom were directors of the mental clinics in the metropolitan area gathered and held a conference. At the conference a new organization named as the Association of Community Mental Care, ACMC was established.

At the beginning, the main activities of the organization were holding symposiums for the specialists of the mental health field to promote the community mental health activities. Every symposium was very successful with the many participants but we, the members of the organization, thought of the necessity of strengthening its activities and also consolidating the organization financially.

For those purposes we decided to reform the organization from the voluntary body to the corporate body. On July 18, 2001, the official establishment -meeting was held and we renamed the organization as JAM.

On January 19, 2002, JAM was attested by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and after being attested, JAM has been undertaking several important tasks from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

Also with the contributions from many people and corporations, JAM has been able to strengthen its activities of promoting mental health of the people.
